Environment

APK aims to minimise, mitigate and remediate any impacts from its business on the environment. We recognizes that excellence in managing the Company’s environmental performance is critical to its business success.

This approach encompasses consideration of the environment in all stages of mining; efficient and responsible use of resources, and the rehabilitation of areas affected by mining. As a minimum APK ensures that activities are carried out in compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.

APK is committed to a sustainable future for its business through significant investment in research and development, rehabilitation, renewable energy projects and local environmental initiatives.

By contributing to the successful future of the coal and energy industry through an investment in sustainability, APK is delivering social, economic and environmental benefits to West Kalimantan.

APK’s rehabilitation works at restoring the natural environment to a condition of high biodiversity, which in many cases means a condition superior to that which existed before our arrival or operations. Re-vegetation work, for example, emphasizes the reintroduction of native species which have disappeared from the area, alongside a complement of fruit trees to increase biodiversity and to provide a harvest crop for local populations.

Around or beyond the mining area, Kalimantan houses a diverse array of mammals, reptiles, and birds. The company’s detailed environmental surveys have documented the species diversity. Animals native to the area include the clouded leopard, honey bear, macaque, Bornean gibbon, wild boar, squirrels, civet, langur, antelope, and mouse deer.

The area in which APK operates is subject to profound social change well beyond the impact of the company. The drivers of this change are resource extraction by regional players, migration to Kalimantan, changing regional-national relations, and local politics.

Community aspirations are constantly evolving. APK retains open channels of communication with local communities to stay abreast of changing needs.
